Reading Council are considering a congestion charge

Great news : Reading Council are now considering a congestion charge – a scheme which RBC previously had claimed simply couldn’t happen before the MRT was built.

This development is almost certainly linked to Wokingham’s decision last week to reject the MRT and to growing pressure from various environmental groups and campaigns including SOAR, Reading Friends Of The Earth, the Lib Dems and the Green Party.

Green Councillor Josh Williams’ reaction to the news:

Congratulations everyone. It’s only a consultation, but that has to happen first. In the meantime – well done.

Josh Williams, Green Councillor

Only Labour Councillors will know why they all voted against a workplace parking levy when proposed by the Green Party in February last year, and why they’ve ignored calls for a Congestion Charge ( or Clean Air Zone or Low Emission Zone ) from both the Greens and LibDems for many years and why they focused on an obviously bankrupt ‘MRT’ scheme for so long, leaving us and our children breathing in pollution every day. ”
